Safety Programs · Alberta

A safety program your team actually uses.

Safety program development builds or refreshes the system your business uses to find hazards, train workers, guide supervisors, and follow up on incidents — in plain language that holds up in the field.

Our Safety Leadership Team — senior-led Alberta HSE

Safety Ahead is built on 48 years of Alberta construction and safety field experience — founded by Allan Head (CHSC, NCSO, COR Auditor) and carried forward by a senior-led team. When you engage our team on a safety program, senior advisors work alongside your supervisors, safety manager, advisor, coordinator, supervisor, or admin — or lead the build if you need that support from the start. Whether you are starting fresh, refreshing a binder, or organizing software you already use, you get a firm with depth and field experience — not a one-person shop or a generic template.

Where you're starting from

Where should you start if your safety program is only partly built?

Most of the contractors we work with already have something in place. None of it is wrong — the real question is whether the program holds up where the work actually happens.

A binder on the shelf

It was built for a reason and probably covers the basics. We review what's there, keep what's working, and update what no longer matches your trades or your crews.

Safety software you already use

Software is good at organizing records and forms. We make sure what's in it reflects how your team actually works on site — not just clean files that look complete.

An admin wearing the safety hat

Plenty of small companies run safety through whoever has capacity. We work beside that person and develop them — we don't show up to replace them.

In almost every case, the gap isn't the format — it's the distance between what's documented and what supervisors and crews actually do on site. That's the part we close.

How we build it

Your advisor leads the build on site — senior-led firm oversight behind the work, not a binder mailed to your office. Here's the path most program engagements follow.

  1. 1

Start from a solid base program

We begin with a real program foundation — customized to your industry and how your crews actually work, not a generic template pulled off a shelf.

  2. 2

Come on site and audit what's actually happening

We come to your business and look at field practice, supervisor behaviour, and records — the distance between what's written down and what happens on the job. Your advisor leads the site work; senior oversight on the engagement.

  3. 3

    Build an industry-specific plan

We turn what we find into a clear, systematic plan mapped to your trades and your sites — whether that's closing program gaps or getting audit-ready.

  4. 4

    Implement and train right away

Changes start immediately — we don't wait until the program is “finished on paper.” We train and support your supervisors and staff while improvements go live.

  5. 5

Build safety culture into daily work

We help supervisors develop their own crews, keep standards consistent across shifts and sites, and build follow-through that holds up under an audit or an OHS visit.

  6. 6

Keep it current as the work changes

The program is reviewed and maintained as crews, equipment, and job sites change — with the same senior team available when you need them, not a handoff and goodbye.

Field + team

What gets tested — and who carries it on site.

COR auditors and OHS officers test whether the program is real on the ground. We develop the supervisors and coordinators who make that true — alongside your team, not instead of them.

They interview people at every level

Owners, supervisors, and workers — to see whether everyone understands the hazards and the rules that apply to their own job.

They check that records match practice

Documentation has to line up with what's actually happening on site — not describe a company that doesn't exist anymore.

They observe the work and the conditions

They walk the site and watch how the work is really done, because that's where the risk actually lives.

How we develop your people

Customized supervisor workshops

Built around your industry and your crews — not off-the-shelf content. Material supervisors recognize as relevant to their real job.

Mentoring for your coordinator or admin

The person already carrying safety develops faster working alongside a senior advisor. We build them up — we don't sideline them.

Teaching supervisors to lead their crews

Tailgate leadership, consistent standards across shifts and sites, and follow-through when conditions change.

Senior leadership when you need it

We work alongside your existing safety staff, or lead the function independently while you build it — whichever fits your operation right now.

Built to a gold standard

Bulletproof and audit-ready — whether you chase the certificate or not.

We build every program to be bulletproof and audit-ready from day one — whether you have 3 people or 300, and whether or not you ever pursue the official certificate. You shouldn't have to scramble when a contract, an audit, or an OHS visit shows up. A program built to the standard means you're ready either way. We prepare you to that standard; the certificate itself is issued by your certifying partner.

If your goal is the COR certificate specifically, see how that path works

Common questions about safety programs

Straight answers about how this works.

A safety program is the co-ordinated system your business uses to find and control hazards, train workers, guide supervisors, and follow up on incidents. Under Alberta's OHS Act, a written health and safety program is required once you regularly employ 20 or more workers — counted across all your work sites. Employers with fewer than 20 workers aren't required to have a full written program, but they still must document their hazard assessment and control process and have an emergency response plan in place. Either way, having the program written down is one thing — whether it holds up in the field is another.

Alberta no longer prescribes a fixed list of required program elements — since December 2021 the law focuses on outcomes rather than a set checklist, so you have flexibility in how you build it. In practice, a working program still covers the same ground: how you find and control hazards, train workers and confirm they're competent, supervise on site, handle incidents, and respond in an emergency. Writing these down isn't enough — they need to be followed consistently across every crew and job site.

In plain terms: find the hazards, control them, train your workers, confirm they know what they're doing, supervise properly, and make sure work is actually being done safely. Having a program in place is not enough — you are responsible for making sure it is actually being followed.

Under Alberta's OHS Act, a competent worker is one who is adequately qualified, suitably trained, and has enough experience to do the work safely — with little or no supervision — and who knows the hazards and the rules that apply. In practice that means defining what competency looks like for each role, confirming workers actually meet it, and keeping records that show it over time.

What worked for a small crew gets harder to manage as crews, job sites, equipment, and supervisors increase. As work changes, the program needs to keep pace so everyone is using the same standards in the same way.

Software helps organize records and forms — and many of our clients use it well alongside a customized program. What software alone doesn't provide is a program built for your specific work, supervisor coaching on site, mentoring for your safety staff, and senior leadership when conditions change or OHS shows up. Safety Ahead provides customized programs, supervisor and staff development, and fractional HSE leadership — working alongside your team or leading independently. We can help with records and tools when useful; our focus is your people and your operation in the field.

Not on its own. Having a written program or a digital system is a starting point, not a finish line. OHS compliance means the program is being followed consistently in the field — by supervisors, by workers, and across all your job sites. A well-organized system that isn't being used won't protect your workers or your company.

No. Many clients come to us with something already in place. We start with a current-state review, identify gaps between what's documented and what's happening on site, and build or refresh what's needed — customized to your trades and how work is actually done. You don't need to discard your binder or platform; we help make the program work in practice and develop the supervisors and safety staff who carry it on site.

We coach supervisors and safety coordinators on site — customized workshops, mentoring, and teaching them how to develop safety culture with their own crews. That includes consistent standards across shifts, tailgate leadership, and follow-through when conditions change. We work alongside your existing safety staff or provide independent senior leadership while you build the function.

OHS officers look at whether your hazard controls are working in the field, whether your supervisors are competent and accountable, and whether your workers are actually safe. They will interview workers, review records, and walk the site. Having documentation is important, but it's what's happening in the field that determines the outcome of an inspection.
